About the Author

Stephen Prata taught astronomy, physics, and computer science at the College of Marin in Kentfield, California. It looks like the customer reviews for C Primer Plus (by Stephen Prata) are mixed in with another book on C++. So, to be clear, this review is for C Primer Plus (6th Edition).I am a competent R programmer interested in expanding my skills to something more high performance, After struggling through the classic but sparse K&R text on C, I turned to this book. It has not disappointed. I am halfway through the book and now can easily handle basic I/O, different variable types, operators, functions, arrays, pointers (well, are pointer ever easy?) and most (all?) control statements. It is a comprehensive text that thoroughly explains principles including how and why things go wrong. The end-of-the-chapter review questions include answers, and the programming exercises (also at the end of each chapter but sans solutions) are appropriate applications of principles and skills. They were challenging, but not so impossibly hard that they could not be solved. This book, and learning C in general, also provides insight into how computers work - how they are storing the information and how to access that information, for example. Lastly, the book is wryly funny, sprinkled with all sorts of jokes about the inconveniences computers and programming can cause humanity (e.g. From Chapter 10: "There is no need to subject yourself to the ridicule of your compiler.") I'm sure the book has some downsides, but I have not yet found them. The mistakes in syntax other reviewers refer to appear to have been corrected in this edition.

C Primer Plus is well-written and carefully edited, and I like the structure they chose: each chapter is followed by a review of the key concepts, a summary, and then review questions and then, finally, programming exercises.By presenting the material, then reminding the reader of it twice (key concepts and summary), then giving the reader two opportunities to think each of the concepts through (review questions and exercises), the reader leaves each chapter knowing the material reasonably well.C Primer Plus covers all the basics of C programming, and it does it well. It's a great place to start for anyone serious about learning the C programming language.

I own numerous texts that delve into various programming languages but this is by far the single best book I own that covers computer programming at any level. This book will serve as a foundation for anyone learning programming [not just c] and very thoroughly how code interfaces with hardware. Should also be an essential book in every seasoned programmers library as well.I don't think any book I've ever read starts at zero then walks you through every logical construct and how programming decisions so fundamentally impact hardware / memory allocation so completely.This book is a gem for both beginners and pros.

The Kindle edition of this book all but guarantees a very frustrating learning experience. Many lines of text have words with character spacings that are nonsensically ultra-wide and nearly unreadable. Some characters such as bullet points are not displayed correctly and code examples are more often than not just collections of jumbled text. I encounter similar viewing problems using both the Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle PC Reader platforms. I am very disappointed with the surprisingly low level of quality control from the publisher.

I'm only three chapters in and am already loving it. Although I studied c along time ago, the review has been great - and the comprehensive coverage of things helps me pick up things I missed. I'm appreciative of the reviewers who advised against the Kindle version due to formatting issues, although the first few chapters did not cause me an issue. Hats off the Amazon for allowing a 'sample' of the book purchased to allow you to start reading early while awaiting delivery of your hard copy. This allowed me to start my studying right away and I haven't missed a beat.Very pleased with the whole process so far.

This is way more fun and interesting to read than Tom Clancy. - truly!This book is outstanding. It so well written that it serves as a complimentary guide to basic C++ skills.You learn about all the cool things the language is capable of without being overwhelmed or intimidated.I find myself reading chapters more than once just for fun. - I guess I need to get a life.

I've had this book for some time now and haven't come close to finishing it. Stephen goes into great detail for each topic covered and I loved his view on pointers which made them very clear for me, as they were something I struggled with. I purchased this book to see what's changed in the 11 standard and it has been more of a relearning than a reference guide. I would highly recommend this book if you're new to C++ and want to have a book that really does the job well for teaching a new student.I've been taking my time with this book and absorbing everything without moving forward because I want to understand the language in it's most intricate parts and apply what I've learned before moving forward. I purchased Ivon Horton's Visual Studio 2010 for C++ and while I felt the book was great, it is in my opinion that the information in this book was relayed better for my learning needs. I would buy this book again and certainly as a gift for a friend or family member who is looking to learn C++.Highly recommended and all of the code samples worked without any problems.

I hate to give this any less than five stars because the content is very good. But one of the reasons I purchased the Kindle version was so I could have my small Kindle in front of me while I'm working on it rather than a massive 1000+ page tome with all the awkwardness of its bulk on my cluttered desk. However, the formatting of the code examples is so terrible they are next to useless. While alphanumeric characters are lined up correctly, all the symbols, such a *, +, -, { }, ; are all out of place. And that's pretty important. The difference between a++ and ++a is a significant one.I guess it's back to the dead tree edition.
