Andy did a fantastic job covering the full stack of web development for someone completely new to the topic. The structure of the book gives a complete noob the ability to understand each part of the "full stack," (HTML/CSS/JavaScript/Backend(PHP)/Database(MySQL)) in smaller manageable minibooks.Great information to start learning webdev, however some visual examples are a bit outdated. What's important is the functionality is still there. Would also recommend skimming through the jQueryUI sections, as you'll likely be using a more updated JS framework or library for interactive UIs, such as Angular, Vue, React or Ember.Would love to see a 2019 version of the Dummies book or even an intermediate level webdev title from Andy that covers some other server-side languages/frameworks like Node.js, Django, Ruby or even Tomcat.Thanks Andy!

Extremely useful especially for beginners, even better for college students going into computer science or communications. Requires no site to download files or anything extra unless you just choose to. I've been taking computer coding classes, but it's so fast paced that I don't retain the information or have little notes to fall back on to understand how it works. It has been great for a few research projects as well. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a reference or starting point.

This book is an excellent comprehensive treatment of HTML5 and CSS3. I post this simply as a warning that you should be wary of purchasing this if you are planning to use the book exclusively on a Kindle reader on a Windows PC. The problem is that the table of contents window is virtually unusable. Attempting to expand or collapse a section tends to affect other sections that should not have been affected, sometimes pushing the desired section out of view. It does, however, seem to work just fine on my android tablet.

Yes, you can pretty much find all of the material in this book somewhere on the Internet, but chances are it will not be covered in as much detail or depth. I still believe a well-written book is the best access to fundamental materials for learning how to code. If this had a bit more Javascript and jQuery included, it would be darn near perfect, but even as it is, I give it 5 stars as an introductory educational tool.

When I purchased this book, I was not aware that it contained 8 volumes in one. Best surprise ever!! If you are oooking for a book to cover the basics and use language the average person can understand, this is it. For me, the best part is that it covers JavaScript and php for server because it's very helpful for making a fully function website

Very well thought out book. Covers every possible subject related to deploying code that works. Almost too much information, so it takes a while to wade through it all. Most complete 'dummies' book I have ever read.

Give Us a King! Samuel, Saul, and David is Everett Fox's new translation of Saul I and II. Fox, whose translation of The Five Books of Moses is by far the best contemporary rendering of Hebrew Scripture, has performed another literary miracle with Give Us a King!. His style presumes that "the reader of the Bible should ideally recite the text aloud, allowing himself or herself to be led by its sound rather than presupposing what is to be found there," as Fox explains in this book's introduction. Consequently, Fox's translation (which appears on the page in the form of free verse, not as prose) preserves the strangeness of the Hebrew text, rather than smoothing it over with English euphemisms and elegant transitions. The style of Fox's translation, one hopes, will bring new readers to consider the perennially urgent matters described by Samuel I and II. According to Fox, the central themes of these stories are personal responsibility and leadership--"a people's struggle with what it means to ask for leadership, how the leaders measure up to the task, and how the ideals of a culture fare in that process." This is the second volume of Fox's translations that I have read. I used this during a four-month study of the life of David, done with some college men, and I found Fox's renderings so refreshing and helpful in getting beyond the surface translations that we use for most of our daily reading and study.

Everett Fox is simply wonderful, and in my opinion (as a Christian scholar of Judaism) Fox offers those who would seek it out, better access to the power of the original Hebrew stories which are tragically human, but so true, but also they are so beautiful. Check out his other translations!

Excellent book by scholar. No religious ideas push just good reading of the history of the Jewish people

Having thoroughly enjoyed Fox's translation of the Five Books of Moses, I have looked forwards to finding a copy of this, which is a translation of books of Samuel. The prose, the feel, the way drama is developed, all come with a freshness and a sort of wonderful strangeness that makes the work come alive again. I also like the way the names, including the sacred name of God (presented as the Tetragrammaton) preserve a distinctly Hebrew pronunciation, and how certain phrases or words are translated into compound-hyphenated-wording, which gives the feeling like one can sense the concept that might be covered over or overly simplified otherwise. I cant wait until the rest of The Early Prophets is made available!

You have NEVER read the old testament till you read Everett Fox's translations of it. It is a veritable revelation to see whole new meanings in the words, phraseology, and syntax. Now, Mr. Fox, how 'bout the rest of the OT. After teasing us with the Pentateuch and 1 & 2 Samuel, I am ITCHING to read the Psalms this way, as well as Isaiah, Ezra-Nehemiah, etc.

I do enjoy Everett Fox's translations. He has a better pronunciation of the Hebrew.

I'm single and have been for several years. This story and the feelings of the main character were so relatable. I've had most of these feelings and dated someone who said many of the things that Miles said. Fortunately like the main character, I eventually realized that God is always first and that actions are far more important than words. Loved this book. I don't like reading but I read this book in one day.

I really enjoyed this story, 💗it supposed to be a true story, if its not it should be. Because it really touch the realty of what a lot men and women go thought in such of good Christian soul mate, and the mistakes we make when we get in a hurry to find someone that Got have not chosen for you. I feel like this book was written just for me. I am at a place in my life like your main character seeking answers from God as to why he has allowed me to remain a single mother. I feel God speaking to me through your words. In particular at the women's retreat, I was moved to tears by the words used to explain the reason for our singleness. I am trusting God and standing on my faith as I wait for my Boaz.

This was a wonderful well put together book. I think every young woman should read this book who is trying to find love. This is my 3rd book by this author and the books get better and better each and every one. I love how she always has the Lord in her messages. We must have patience and pray and wait on the Lord. He’s writing our story and he will let you know when the time is right.

This book got on my nerves!! Why??? Because, I saw SOME of myself, thoughts and feelings in this book. The mental abuse I endured, etc. It's a very good read and if you have been or are mentally abused, it shows thoughts on how to come through it all. However, if you are going thru any abuse - GET OUT!!! God would not have that for you. We are meant to be loved and respected. Enjoy the book.

This book was a page-turner!! The story was amazing and Spirit filled. I really enjoyed it and would recommend this book to all single ladies. I also noted some similarities from my own experiences and mistakes. (On a side note: the only thing I wasn't pleased with was the plethora of typos. Yes, I am a stickler for grammar when it comes to the books I read; if you're not, then it won't be a problem. Otherwise the story itself was awesome!)

The book manages to weave very complex discussion of geopolitical and economic events into the retelling of the events leading up to the death of a hunter/trapper/poacher and the subsequent investigations and tracking down of a man-eating tiger. By the end of the book one can only feel immense sorrow for all of the characters in the story; not only the people left to fend for themselves in an unforgiving land, and the desperate situation the Amur tigers face as they lose their status as the majestic masters of the wild, as their numbers dwindle due to habitat destruction, poaching, and as their human neighbors slowly lose respect for the tigers’ position as a sacred part of the natural environment all these beings share. As it happens the humans and the tigers in this story share the same fate: They are all in decline and it’s a tragedy of monumental proportion. All in all the author has done an amazing job of telling this tale with respect and empathy for all the players, and this book is well worth a careful read.

While Scatch is free to use and free explanations are available at scratch.mit.edu, I have purchased three different books from this series and highly recommend them for a step-by-step guide for younger children. The books introduce new skills with each lesson. My granddaughters who are 6 and 7 were able to use them and were engrossed in the coding for longer periods of time with each use than I anticipated. The 6-year-old needed help with the reading

After doing the earlier coding work books from DK, my son wanted to do more projects like the very customized ones he was seeing on scratch.mit.edu. But I had no idea how to help him. Where I had a problem was with the idea that Montezuma wanted to "collect" Spaniards from the moment he heard about them landing in what is now Mexico. A variety of sources have stated that, rather than lure Cortes to the Aztec capital, Montezuma tried to bribe him to stay away. Once the Spaniards did arrive, Montezuma may well have decided to add the invaders to his collection, but it seems unlikely that he started out wanting to do so.So what else is wrong with this book? His view of Cortes fits that category. While it does give a reader pause to realize that Cortes had only one truly successful event in his life, the capture of the Aztec capital, the author tears him down at every opportunity. He comes across as, at best, a tool of the other Spanish commanders and at worst, a mediocrity without authority or a single useful idea in his head. Even Cortes's worst enemies never underrated him so much.Then there is the author's unwillingness to face the role sacrifice played in the Aztec religion. Justifiably he does question the claim that vast numbers of captured warriors ended up on Aztec sacrificial stones. Starting in the Classical world, European writers did have a fondest for adding zeros to any number they wrote down. That said, as often as possible when writing about the Aztecs, the author insists on using the term "execution" rather than sacrifice. He does this in large measure so that he can claim that the Spaniards killed more people than the Aztecs. That is very probably true. The trouble is emphasizing Spanish brutality conflicts with his next claim, that in the wars of the Aztec wars of the 1520s, the Spaniards were more or less along for the ride.The author's enthusiasm to see the defeat of the Aztecs as primarily a victory for their indigenous rivals leads to his claim that the Spaniards played a rather minor military role in the victory. Having painted himself into that corner, the author has no way to explain how the Spanish killed or enslaved vast numbers of not only Aztecs but other Mesoamericans as well and finally ended up in control of what they called New Spain. In fact the author doesn't even try to explain it.Despite these objections, the author has unquestionably done his research and has valuable contributions to make. Less special pleading would have helped communicate these useful contribution much more effectively.

To be honest I'm just halfway thru the book. Had to stop twice because the writing style makes it very difficult to get thru a chapter without having to yell out loud things like "yes, you've told me that a hundred times in the last 50 pages".It is obvious the writer fervently believes in his theory and 'facts',exhaustively repeating them over and over. And repeats them. And repeats them. And.....Another annoying constant is that the author is always indicating that a subject or reference "will be covered in a subsequent chapter", it's so frequent you want to scream -again!This is one of the most frustrating books I've ever (attempted) to read).

Beginning with his letters to Carlos I in the 1520s, and the hagiography of him by Gómara shortly thereafter, Cortés's central role in the Conquest has been portrayed as one of complete control and mastery of the events that led to the fall of Tenochtitlan. Even as historical interpretations of Cortés have changed throughout the centuries--from a courageous deliverer of Christianity and civilization to a brutally violent and genocidal warmonger-- he is constantly portrayed as a brilliant, yet conniving, strategist, with perfect information, and in complete control of the events.Restall's thoroughly researched book does two things brilliantly. One, he shows us, through what must have been an exhaustive reading of every narrative ever written about the Conquest since it happened more than 500 years ago, HOW the story became shaped and WHY it's been so hard to dislodge, even today. And two, he broadens our view of those events between 1519-1521 as they actually unfolded in the real world of Mesoamerican politics, a world Cortés had little insight into (his two translators notwithstanding), and even less control over.There is a lot of underlying humor in the book as Restall highlights some of the more absurd reimaginings various authors came up with recreating the narrative. I found myself chuckling many times as I listened to the book. I thought the narration was terrific, spot on.

Scholarly deconstruction of the Cortez story, one of my favorites in history. It helps, going into this, to be familiar with it already. The author makes a good case, I came away convinced, but felt a little sad to have the splendor, if that's the word I want, stripped from the familiar tale. One thing that kind of annoyed me was his insistence on calling Aztec human sacrifice, " ritual execution." Come on, dude!

I was hoping for more information on camping and things to see along 395 via my motorhome.... this is a great buy if u are a biker biker or climber

Such an extensive area, so little time and so fewer pages. Although this book claims to be the "beta" version of Highway 395, this also may be its downfall. Granted, the author does what he set to do, but the problem is covering such a vast region in a fresh way. Dozens of books have been written about the Eastern Sierra. Perhaps this is the problem. Although this might be minor, I had some trouble ignoring some of the author's grammar issues, but otherwise an okay book. Maybe I am being too hard on this piece, but as a "veteran" of the Eastern Sierra, this one was kind of a snooze. One can only read about the same areas over and over for so long.

This book really opens up the possibilities for adventure. I've driven the 395 straight to Mammoth a million times without stopping and realizing all the treasures that lay along this freeway. Truly an amazing guidebook.The only items I would add, would be winter activities. No mention of places to snowshoe, backcountry ski etc.

This is a great book! It covers just about everything one (hikers, rock climbers bikers, backpackers, geologists, campers, historians, etc) would want to know and more. Great job!

This book does what is claims to do... provide high level travel/activity details over an extensive area. It provides the "beta" for a wide range of activities, from fishing and hiking to rock climbing and biking and more, and fills in details relating to history, geology, etc and a lot of camping and eating recommendations that you cannot find in other resources. If you are looking for a single guide for young-at-heart road tripping eastern California, this is it! It beats buying and carrying several books for the same road trip, hopefully there will be more volumes for different road trips (ie, Hwy 50 through Nevada comes to mind).

In Charles Stross' "The Fuller Memorandum (Laundry Files Book 3)," the pendulum has swung from emphasizing the Spy Thriller (from the previous book) to emphasizing the Horror aspect. Unfortunately, he's gone a bit too far with that and ended up with a book far grimmer than the earlier works. Also, he's switched tones for the Spy Thriller side (apparently emulating Anthony Price (who I don't recognize at all)) and ended up with something that feels awfully Cold War-ish (again, the grimness). Adding to my issues with the book, Stross waxes virulent several times against religion, the U.S., and conservatives, and that's something I don't need to read in the novels I read to escape reality. That's all on the "tone" side of things. On the plot side, the head evil-doer is intuitively obvious to the most casual observer on first introduction (I started writing this part of the review right at that point). In book terms, it sure is odd that the Laundry doesn't more closely watch the group of people who constantly spawn evil-doers and nip them in the bud. Anyway, this book isn't worth the 4 stars I've rated the previous two books. If I could, I'd go with 3-1/2 stars. But, I can't. So, a mere OK 3 stars it is.

If you've read a previous Laundry book, you'll want to read this, and if you haven't, then don't start here, start with the first Laundry book.Reviewing this book on its own merits is hard. It is so clearly part of a series and is bound tightly into a saga I have enjoyed repeatedly. Still, it's tightly plotted, edge of the seat page-turner stuff. There's a bit more slack here than in the Hidden Family/Merchant Princes series; it's not quite so intense a read, but it's not a fault. The author knows we're hooked into the Bob Howard story, and can take his time to deliver a bit more character depth and background because of it.Stross writes a bit more like Neal Stephenson here than Ludlum or Child, but it's almost unfair to say that. By any measure, Stross stands as significant as sci-fi author as Stephenson. Accelerando is possibly the definitive 'technological singularity' novel, but I should probably say more about this book...This feels like the end of the beginning of the series. The protagonist seems to have matured significantly from his early days but probably can't change too much without losing us. This is the book where the Laundry really settles down and makes good on the promise that it wasn't just a one or two book wonder. I think there's a promise of several more books to come here, and subsequent publications have borne that out.

I decided to give The Laundry series another try after being gravely disappointed with The Jennifer Morgue. I was intrigued in The Atrocity Archives by the possibilities of a Lovecraftian spy agency, particularly since I was a huge fan of Delta Green, but The Jennifer Morgue's parody of James Bond was shallow and uninteresting. The Fuller Memorandum, by contrast, is a return to form and I appreciate it. It takes the premise of a Lovecraftian threat to the world seriously while simultaneously also keeping some of its humor. Unlike The Jennifer Morgue, the humor of the novel doesn't go overboard and remains on the right side of this-close-to-ridiculous. The premise is Bob screws up during a routine exorcism and things go from bad to worse in his professional life. Even worse, this is occurring when there's something happening with a long-buried secret of the Laundry's organizational life. Part of what I enjoyed about this novel is it remembers the terrifying forces the Laundry deals with are actually terrifying. The Atrocity Archives made a nice balance between humor and horror, never going too far into one area or another like The Jennifer Morgue. The humor is actually funny, too, which allows it to be enjoyed for its own sake. The book deals with one of my favorite elements of H.P. Lovecraft's writings, specifically cultists. What does inspire a person to want to worship the Great Old Ones? The book gives the obvious answer and expands on it, horrifying Bob with its logic. It also does a nice parody of upper-class English life, highlighting the kind of secrets which can hide under seemingly respectable people with tongue-firmly-in-cheek. I also enjoyed the story's emphasis on the 'secret history' of the world. Spy fiction depends on realistic politics or, at least, understandable ones. Here, there's nothing realistic about extra-dimensional monsters and creatures from the deep--but the books acts as if they are. I appreciated that as the incorporation of people in real-life political situations trying to use demons somehow "sells" the premise to me. I enjoyed Bob's characterization this time around, the befuddled bureaucrat struggling with his position as well as relationship, which nicely contrasted to previous volumes. Moe also felt more "real" this time around, as opposed to the perfect fantasy girlfriend she's been portrayed as before. I even enjoyed the revelations about Bob's boss, each of them fitting with what we knew about him from before. I can't say The Fuller Memorandum blew me away. This isn't one of those books I walked away feeling like I absolutely had to read the next story but I appreciated it. It's gotten me interested in the series again and I'm going to finish reading it. Kudos, Charles Stross, you've won me back over.8/10
