K-Gr 4—This picture book biography of Mary Blair reveals a woman who thought outside the box and beyond the "rules" of art. Digitally rendered illustrations assist in telling the story of the artist who followed her own vision and relished playing with color. The pictures show paint swirling off the artwork Blair created, emphasizing her desire to be free to do what came naturally. A variety of hues with which readers may not be familiar are introduced, such as sienna, azure, viridian, cerulean, and mauve. Blair accepted a position with Walt Disney Studios during the Depression, assuming the company would welcome her artistic flair. The scene of her first day at work depicts her dressed in teal and pink while the other illustrators, all men, wear black, brown, gray, and white—foretelling the resistance to individuality she encountered. Blair soon resigned from that position and found satisfaction in illustrating books and advertisements, but years later Walt Disney himself hired her back. He appreciated her unconventional use of color and wanted it for the "It's a Small World" ride he designed for the 1964 World's Fair. The ending spread pays homage to that very ride, showing a slew of kids, dressed in cultural costumes, holding hands; however, this depiction reinforces many stereotypes and will likely need to be followed by a discussion. VERDICT Budding artists will enjoy learning about Blair and her persistence in obeying her instincts and creating art that pleased her.—Maryann H. Owen, Oak Creek Public Library, WI

Review
*STARRED REVIEW* "Sunshine radiates past corners and mermaids swim off the page, while rainbow wisps stream from Mary’s paintbrush and trail after her fingers.... The whimsical illustrations will enamor young readers while older kids will learn about a Disney legend as well as new words, such as russet or viridian. An independent, enthusiastic role model, Mary will teach young readers how to value what makes them special and advocate for their talents." (Booklist, July 2017, starred review)"Barrager's hues...are energetic.... A bright homage to Blair's bold work." (Kirkus Reviews, June 2017)"Walt Disney Studios were pretty solidly a man’s world when Mary Blair and her passionate love of zingy color reported to work in 1940 . . . [K]ids and their adult readers…will be rewarded with a story of a woman worth knowing, and they will enjoy the ’60s mod colorscape and collage-like retro design that echos Blair’s 'Small World' achievement." (BCCB July/August 2017)"This picture book biography of Mary Blair reveals a woman who thought outside the box and beyond the “rules” of art.... Budding artists will enjoy learning about Blair and her persistence in obeying her instincts and creating art that pleased her." (School Library Journal July 2017)"The aesthetic of artist Mary Blair has had an outsize impact on the children’s book world, and now her life story gets its own book.... Barrager (Uni the Unicorn) laces her vibrant images with visual references to Blair’s memorable work.... An effervescent tribute that doesn’t sugarcoat Blair’s path to success." (Publishers Weekly, July 2017)"Barrager's digital illustrations employ a kaleidoscopic, Fauvist palette and intense patterns in a retro aesthetic that reflects the time of Disney's golden age. Guglielmo and Tourville's text uses deliciously precise color names.... This is a love letter to the color wheel and a prismatic snapshot of a commerical artist's singular style, with a touch of feminism as this woman's vivacious creativity couldn't be dulled by "men in charge," with their "black lines and strict rules."" I bought this book to read with my daughter who is five. This book is everything I look for in books for her. It's beautifully written with attention to language and sound, it features someone who relentlessly follows her dreams despite obstacles, and it teaches readers about Mary Blair while helping them learn new color words they may not have heard before. It's stunningly illustrated as well and we spent time matching the colors used in the text to the colors used in the images. I didn't know much about Mary Blair as an artist before, so I'm happy I got to share this learning experience with my daughter.
This book is wonderful! I ordered it per a friend's recommendation and it's so lovely. Beautiful illustrations, rich language, and an inspiring story for kids. Also, the suggested age is 4-8 (which I think is appropriate) but my son is 2.5 and he loves it and will gladly sit through the entire thing and then asks to read it again, in large part because the illustrations are so colorful and engaging! Highly recommend and it would make an excellent gift!
This book is a delight. Not only is it a lesson in colors, and the use to color your world, but it is the life of a young girl who loved color. Even though employed by Disney, the men in the administration above her, declined her bright work suggestions. She leaves and pursues her own career only to be contacted by Walt Disney himself, asking her to come back. She does on one condition, she has the final word. She designs the new exhibit for Disneyland — It's a Small World. Youngsters and families have been enjoying it ever since. She also was the illustrator for some of the Little Golden Books. A Magical story of color and following your dream. Perfect gift for little artists in your family. Great for school and classroom libraries.
This is a great biography of Mary Blair the artist who created the art for It's a Small World. I am excited to share this with other stories of women who worked hard to achieve and persisted no matter being held back by others.
A fabulous picture book for any age!! Lovely pictures and a great story line! HIGHLY recommend!!
Stunning artwork and inspiring story. I read it to a third grade class this week and they were amazed. Everyone can recognize Mary Blair's work at Disneyland!
This is the story of the wonderful Disney artist-Mary Blair!I have been sharing this book with my elementary studentduring our study of Mary Blair. Story & illustrations arewonderful!
Read this one with my 5 year old at least once a week, it has become a new favorite in our house. I had no idea of her story and the history of the artists at Disney so it was a great learning book for me too!
