Usually I prefer finished artwork to sketchbook material. But I am especially interested in this particular volume of the Crumb Sketchbooks because it dates from his late twenties, the age when a person matures into full adulthood and usually completes the developmental cycle psychology researcher Daniel J Levinson referred to as the Early Adult Transition. Crumb seems to demonstrate that life stage transition in drawings collected herein. Somewhere around one-third of the way into this volume Crumb's sketches suddenly explode with the neurotic quirks and fetishes he continued to refine obsessively for the rest of his long influential career.The volumes in this series planned for publication after this one will collect sketches from years when Crumb's fame and popularity grew so they will appeal more broadly to underground comix fans and art book readers in general.However, this might be the single most important volume in the series because it covers the period when Crumb's psychological quirks started to infuse his work.The format size, paper stock, and printing quality more than do justice to these sketches. I wish the affordable edition of Crumb's _Sex Obsessions_ book had been formatted in this size rather than the somewhat smaller lower-budget one it was published in.

Excellent drawings and a great peek inside the Genius of R Crumb. Great reference for all cartoon or just regular artists.

Love this book. A great look inside the mind of a person whose mind is already pretty transparent in his other works. Highly recommended if youâ€™re a fan of Mr. Crumb.

Another great collection of sketches by Robert Crumb in the very affordable Taschen series of sketch book reproductions. Having owned the German series of sketchbooks and the Fantagraphic versions I feel like this is the best version of all three. The paper is a good quality, the size is nice, the reproductions are excellent, and the low price is amazing. Since this series will eventually collect newer material not in any of the other series you might a well just collect these and have a unified set. Highly recommended.
