I don’t think most people realize how rare four editions are in a hiking guide. Nor how hard it is to keep a hiking book up to date over more than a decade, especially in an area like Santa Barbara where land use regulations, property rights and floods can change Trail routes in a heartbeat. But here we are with the fourth edition of my favorite among Robert Stone’s many hiking guides to the California Coast.I love this book first and foremost because I love the Santa Barbara region. If any place epitomizes Mediterranean climate in California this is it. Lots of great beach and bluff walks, hikes along the steep but not very high mountains abutting the Santa Barbara coast, and the many trails in the Okami area and Sespe wilderness cry out for spring and early summer exploration.I’ve walked a little over half the trails in this book, and after reading the new edition am already plotting a couple of short weekend backpack trips to Santa Barbara this May. But should you get the book if you have one of the earlier editions? The answer is a qualified yes. Enough routes have changed (and the author has added three new hikes) that the new edition is worth it. But if you like casual strolls along beaches and bluffs to see wildlife (seals, monarch butterflies, and more) then many of the short classic hikes have remained unchanged. It’s a tribute to the communities around Santa Barbara that they have maintained such incredible trails in a landscape where rapid change is the norm. And everyone, not just locals, will be richly rewarded by exploring the trails in this book.
