Encyclopedia of Crystals, Revised and Expanded, by Judy Hall

Review

Organized by crystal color, Hall?s (The Crystal Bible) comprehensive guide provides valuable information on nearly 1000 existing and newly discovered stones, their fluorescent properties, and their mineral content. In the instructive foreword, she describes the eight fundamental crystal structures, historical uses, and elemental formation. She also gives directions for activating crystals? cleansing and healing properties and discusses their relationship to chakras. Five hundred gorgeous, sensuously colored photographs accompany the entries. Because the book addresses subjects relevant to both scientific interest and alternative therapy, it is highly recommended for collections focusing on geology or holistic therapies. -Library Journal April 2007

Such an amazing book. It’s a must have when trying to get to know your crystals. It’s the best book out so far for crystals I have encountered. If you do not have this on your collection you have to get a copy. Supper knowledgeable in all aspects. please see pictures and video attached so you can see this is a must have encyclopedia.

This review originally appeared on The Magical Buffet website on 04/24/14.As you guys may recall, I am a lady that loves me some crystals, gemstones, and minerals. I was excited by the historical insights offered by “A Lapidary of Sacred Stones” by Claude Lecouteux and Isidore Kozminsky’s “Crystals, Jewels, Stones: Magic & Science” but I was downright thrilled to be given access to the practical, revised and expanded edition of, “The Encyclopedia of Crystals” by Judy Hall. You may recognize Hall’s name as the author of “Crystals and Sacred Sites: Use Crystals to Access the Power of Sacred Landscapes for Personal and Planetary Transformation” that I reviewed here on The Buffet. Well, when Hall isn’t busy proposing new theories on how to use crystals she’s authoring some of the most definitive guides to minerals and gemstones. So why are her books some of the best out there? Glad you asked. My favorite feature, and the most obvious, is that the crystals are laid out (or listed if you prefer) in the book by color. How great is that? Hey, I have this purple stone and I can’t remember what it is. No problem, I’ll pull out the “Encyclopedia” and flip to the purple section and see what it matches up with. How awesome is that? But I know what stone I want to read about! Again, not a problem. There is an alphabetical crystal index at the front of the book and there is a thorough index in the back of the book as well. There is also a short but very informative introduction that covers everything from basic geology to the chakras. Each stone is given a fantastic image or two to help with identification. Then they list: crystal system, chemistry, hardness, source, chakra, number, zodiac sign, planet, and what it’s beneficial for. After that there is a paragraph with historical and folkloric detail.Judy Hall’s “Encyclopedia of Crystals” is an absolute must own for anyone interested in minerals and gemstones. If you’re going to own just one book as a resource on crystals, this is the one.

I am very pleased with this book. I had been debating on the Crystal Bibles 1, 2, and 3. Though I wanted one book and no redundancy. This book delivered. The photography is beautiful and I like the color code organization. You can reference by name in the index.

Color coated, detailed and beautifully organized through and through. Even with owning all three crystal bibles, this is still a worthy purchase. Informative with even more information.

Decent book. one big problem: NO INDEX. The stones are organized by color, not name. So unless you know a lot about the stones you are referencing or feel like flipping through fifty pages to see that its not represented I say go with another book. The Crystal Bible is a good place to start. Also by Judy Hall but has a TOC that lists the stones by name so you can actually find them in the book.

I only recently discovered the joy of Crystals and semi - precious stones. This book has been very helpful in learning about the metaphysical properties. I love how it is divided by color, very helpful when you have no clue what the name of the stone is! It also includes the hardness, which is very important too. I highly recommend this book!

I just got the book, and I already love it. I've got The Book of Stones, which is very in-depth, and informative, but the Encyclopedia of Crystals is the perfect counterpart to the book of stones. It's organized by color, which is the best part. It makes it easier to identify those gemstones and crystals you acquired awhile back and can't recall their name. The descriptions are just enough of an overview to not overwhelm you with info that you end up forgetting things. I think it would be a great book for beginners looking into crystals for the first time as well. Glad I picked it up.

I Love this book, it has so many different crystals and such good information. Honestly this book is missing some crystals that I have which was a little disappointing but honestly I still absolutely love it, I love how its color coded for the crystals but they still have the index in alphabetical order. I'll probably add pages to this myself but this is a great book and if you wanna get into crystals and learn about them and work with them, then i highly recommend this book.
