This book is exactly what I was hoping for. My wife and I adopted a pregnant mustang last summer and had a need to know more about foaling than we did. We do now! We live in a very rural area of Arizona and for us there just are no vets a simple phone call away. This book doesn't assume that you will have a vet on hand for the birth. What it does do is get into all of the details such as what should happen, what could go wrong, and what to do if something does go wrong. It also covers care of the foal and the mare after the birth. We are 100% satisfied with this book!
Even though I’m a lifelong horse woman, having our own foal is a new experience. I want to raise the baby right.
While the author provided good basics about foaling out a mare I found some of her tips to be inaccurate. The author seemed to be very rigid in her opinions and I think that some of what she suggested are outdated methods.For the beginner breeder this is a great book to start with.
I bought a lot of books in anticipation of my first foal being born. This one is BY FAR the best one I've come across. It is now kept safely with my foaling kit to have as a quick referral. A must buy in my opinion!
WOW, I love this book and feel it has set me on the right path and gave me a total plan for my broodmare who is getting ready to foal. This book is a total blessing and I can't say enough good things about it.

Bought this book when we knew for certain our mare was getting ready to foal .... It was a tremendous resource! Read book prior to her foaling and when the foaling process hit a bit of a snag I knew exactly what page to turn to for guidance. Would recommend this to anyone who needs either a refresher course or a handy reference on foaling. Read book cover to cover and as the due date grew closer, knowing I had this book at my fingertips I was able to look more confidently and with less trepidation to our mare giving birth. Glad to say mare and foal and me are all doing well. Excellent resource.
I am a very experienced equestrian, with my mare expecting her second (my first) foal. I am quite familiar with the breeding/foaling/beyond process, but this will be my first time foaling out and raising my own personal foal.Clear, concise book that gets to the point - has excellent pictures and references and is clearly written by a human with opinions and personal experience. This book is more like talking to a good friend or breeding expert in person, as opposed to reading a college curriculum book. It has great checklists and helpful tips and hints, as the author clearly includes the mare's (and foal) comfort level and things that could overall just make her more comfortable through the process of late term/foaling/new mommihood.
