I was hoping for some new insight into Jim Corbett's account of his hunt for the Champawat maneater, but there is nothing new here. The author's speculations are off the mark in a number of places, as he lacks real insight into tigers and hunting them. If you are interested in this subject by all means read the books by Jim Corbett and Kenneth Anderson--they are riveting reads and a much better investment of your time and money.
I thought I was buying a book about hunting and killing a tiger that had killed over 400 humans. Instead it was a book with interminable details of insignificant historical matters of the area. And contnuous insinuations of what awful people we are based on looking back at historical happenings based on our current perspective. I wanted to know about the trials and tribulations of a man trying to help eliminate a deadly peril to a large population that needed his help. That I did not get.
After reading Huckelbridge's previous page-turners about Bourbon and Beer, and his affecting novel "Castle of Water," I knew that "No Beast So Fierce" would be a similarly engrossing read - and is it ever! More than a simple history, this book illuminates the stakes of the ongoing contest between man and nature like no other I know. I can't recommend highly enough!
The first inkling of an agenda is right on the title: This particular man eater(or should I say "person eater" to align with the author's political agenda) is known to history as the Champawat TIGRESS. Although the author does identify the animal as female in the narrative, when combined with his obvious "white guilt" about British colonialism (arguably the best thing that happened to that country and indeed the rest off those future countries within the imperial orb), the author wastes no time in blaming the British for just about everything and yes, there I say, the global warming hoax is addressed as a bi-product of the evil Europeans. Further, he erroneously ascertains as fact the big cats ONLY resort to man eating when aged or wounded. This is patently false. The Panar leopard for example (#2 in the all time kill list with 400 kills) was in perfect health when killed by LtCol Corbett and for that matter, the history of the apex predator cats is full of accounts of these healthy animals killing just for the sake of killing both man and beast. In India today, where human being are still being taken by the big cats, there is ample evidence of many of them being in perfect health. Lastly, although there were sever excesses in the eradication of many species, sound game management through regulated sport hunting, has been the salvation pf many species, especially in Africa. So if you are looking for yet another slam of Western civilization and culture mixed with some very good, albeit limited knowledge of the sport of hunting, this is your book. As a book lover, I usually keep or give books away to friends, but this one's going into the kitchen garbage, lest foist this to another unsuspecting reader looking for something good to read. IF you want the real scoop on this cat, read Corbett himself or Peter Hathaway Capstick.
This is my favorite of Huckelbridge's four books to date. It has his usual stylish and entertaining tone, and he has a great way with synthesizing lots of history, as in his Bourbon and Beer books. This also reads like an old-fashion adventure tale, like his great novel, Castle of Water. What really distinguishes No Beast So Fierce is the insightful commentary about colonialism and environmental degradation, which leads Huckelbridge to the conclusion that the Champawat tiger was really a "man-made" terror. Highly recommended.
Weaving the thrill of the hunt through background about the history, people, terrain, and environment of Northern India and Nepal was the perfect balance to pull me swiftly through the book, but with plenty of context to prompt thought and deeper understanding that made this more than just a page turner.I found this an immensely enjoyable read: thrilling when narrating tiger hunts, soulful when discussing the flora, fauna, natural beauty of the Terrai region, and illuminating when discussing broader historical context.Two other favorite books I thought of while reading this - Hell or High Water by Peter Heller, which also balances adrenalin with broader context, and Man Eaters of Tsavo by JH Patterson, which is more of the page-turner variety.
I loved No Beast So Fierce for so many reasons, but mostly because of the wealth of detail and interesting context that Huckelbridge uses to tell the story. The Champawat Tiger is fascinating, but the world in which it lived and the reasons why if became so terrifying are the real story here. Admittedly, I wasn't all that familiar with India at turn of the (last) century, so I was surprised by a lot of the book and how relevant it is to today's world. This was a fascinating read all around. Highly recommend.
Really enjoyed the author's layered narrative that pinpointed the many human foibles that helped create the Man-eater of Champawat. The sections on Hindu religion and British colonialism were original contributions to this ecological thriller.
