It seems that the AD&D monster manuals just got progressively weirder as they went on. For the sake of completeness, if you're buying MM1 and the Fiend Folio, you might as well get this one as well. There are a good number of critters within, however, that you might only be tempted to use if you were attempting a very authentic early 80s AD&D experience, or if you are heavily invested in the complexities of early D&D demonology. As with the Fiend Folio (and the Basic Creature Catalog) there are a decent number of "gotcha!" monsters with unusual or surprising qualities that would likely only be entertaining once. However, this is a good source of fodder for midlevel overland "hex crawl" style adventures (especially when combined with the resources within the Wilderness Survival Guide). It is my understanding that these did not sell very well, at least not as well as the earlier monster books, and so it is quite easy to obtain one for a reasonable price with very little damage, and that is very fine indeed.

If you played d&d in the 70's or 80's, or if you are a game historian, how can you not own this?! The amount of nostalgia and good memories this purchase brought is totally worth it. I still remember where I was when I saw half of the pics of monsters for the first time as a young teen. Plus, the art back then was clean and simple, pure almost, not computer aided overly done color prints like most of them today.

Man, this is where it all began. I expect the prices on these will continue to go up as interest in Stranger Things increases, and interest in 80s hobbies in general (as seems to be the rising trend in Millennials; it seems that every generation is interested in the decade which preceded their birth), though thankfully the prices on 1st edition have never been as outrageous as for 2nd.This book is probably mostly useful if you want to actually play 1st edition AD&D, or any of the various retroclones like OSRIC. Or just as a conversation piece of early gaming ephemera. It is not terribly difficult to convert the statblocks to other retroclones like Swords and Wizardry or Labyrinth Lord; you get a feel for THAC0 after a while and can readily convert decending to ascending AC. I like the treasure tables at the end as well for my retroclone use. Takes a lot of thought out of monsters of any challenge level.Plus it has Demogorgon and the Mind Flayer ;)

I remember when the Monster Manual (MM) 1st hit the open market. I was almost 17...it was a long awaited book. When Wizards of the Coast made public their intent to bring back the 1st edition core books of Advanced D&D; it was a great moment. To do this in honor of its creator the late E. Gary Gygax (E.G.G.) is amazing and much appreciated by the fraturnity of gamers that well remember those 1st days of the RPG systems. The Monster Manual that I received is very high quality. This solid book is well bound and will definately last far longer then the original publications from the 70's and 80's. It is simply a quality product. If you used to play the game...back in the day; thumbing through these pages are a welcome stroll down memory lane. It will not disappoint.

My sons gave me the full set of these reprints for Christmas. I have been playing D&D almost since the day it came out (3 small pamphlets in a white cardboard box), and I still do. I have 1st printings of the Monster Manual, Players' Handbook, DM's Guide, and Unearthed Arcana. Since they have been in near continuous use for almost 40 years, my books were beat up, torn, covers falling apart, pages falling out, pizza and coke stains on them.... you name it. It was wonderful to get these again, in new and pristine -- even upgraded -- condition. I have played all the newer versions of D&D, except 5.0, and I keep coming back to the original. Very nostalgic, and very satisfying. And upon opening them, I was very pleased to discover that a portion of the proceeds from the sales of these books is being donated to the building of a memorial to Gary Gygax in Lake Geneva, WI (where it all began).

The price of original print AD&D Monster Manuals is starting to go through the roof. If you need a copy to use in your Old School gaming or want to save your old book from becoming beaten to death from the years of use it has had, then this reprint is a good option. The paper is more durable than the original books, so I can see the premium edition reprints as a useful for actual gaming, as much as for collecting. The text and illustrations are completely true reproductions of the original, so nothing has been changed.Purchasing the AD&D 1e Premium Monster Manual brings back the joy of getting your hands on a MM as if it were the first time. I would have given it 5 stars, but I am not a fan of what WotC has done with the reprint cover - a minor cosmetic thing, but still important to someone who has played AD&D since the beginning.

This is a neat book.I first encountered it back in '83 when it was left with me by a friend who played this game.I flipped through it endlessly for a couple of years before it passed from my hands. Now , 3 decades later I thought to look for this book on Amazon and , hehe , I found it it.So now im back to leafing through it. I also got myself a d&d basic book version 5. I would like to try this game but I need to find the time. The book itself arrived in a timely fashion and its condition is more than acceptable though obviously not perfect.

When it arrived it had the old school cover! I was so excited. This is a great book if you still play original ad&d rules. It was in great shape and arrived in a timely manner.
