I got this book because I wanted to start studying Arabic. It has been a good start because it helps you to say things without really trying to teach you anything complicated. It also teaches you practical vocabulary for common situations. Thus far, I am about half-way through and can already say a good amount in Arabic. The audio CD provides good guidance. However, if one is very interested in proper pronunciation, the man, a native Arabic speaker, has a perfect accent while Jane Wightwick has quite an obvious English accent in Arabic (as far as I know, her intonation is correct, which is the most important thing at this point). However, from the standpoint of an English-speaker, a lot of the sounds in Arabic are quite comparable to those of English and are only subtly different, but those subtle differences play a large role in foreign accents. The two of them split the task of pronouncing the Arabic words, so some audio has the English accent and some doesn't. The games and activities are helpful. This book is a good beginning but does not provide any detailed grammar information. The grammar is very basic, but the point of the book is to help the student start "communicating right away", which it achieves quite well. The book focuses on nouns and adjectives, not really touching on verbs at all (verbs are quite complicated in Arabic and it would not make sense to include them in a beginner's book). Vocabulary is presented in short lists, which is the most effective way to approach vocabulary. As far as reading goes, I would recommend first buying a guide to Arabic handwriting instead of relying on this book to start reading Arabic. I am glad to have found this product.

I'm about halfway through and am really enjoying it. I'm a history major and am focusing on Middle Eastern/US relations and history, and I plan on taking Arabic courses while abroad, but I wanted to give myself a head start. It's important to keep in mind that there are MANY Arabic dialects, so learning vocabulary and the grammar structure from this book will not prepare you for going to any Arab country and talking like a native, but I think it does a good job of introducing you to the basics of the language and will probably make learning a dialect much easier. The MP3 files included in the CD are tons helpful -- I put them into my ipod and it makes them very easy and accessible, though of course listening off the computer is fine too.

it doesn't teach the Arabic alphabet in the beginning. it makes it very confusing to jump straight into it without being able to recognize or know how to pronounce any of the letters

I had used the Japanese version of this book and really enjoyed it--the Chinese version is just as excellent. This is a textbook that is fun, that you will want to use. It has large type, pictures, great audio clips that require participation, and games. It's perfect for self-study.

Jane Wightwick and her collaborator are the best language educators I have encountered. I've never seen a more "game like" approach to language teaching that makes it fun and effective.

I am totally new to learning Arabic and this book is great to get me started and for some daily practice! This suits me just fine as anything more may be a bit much at this point. I am considering this book as a building block to other more advanced books! I currently only know English so this book transitions me slowly into the Arabic language, which is preferable.

This Arabic book is really great for someone who already knows the alphabet and the sounds of it's letters. If you have that skill down, then you will really enjoy this teaching book. It's well organized and each chapter offers useful vocabulary and creative ways to remember the new words.

It helps if you are familiar with the Arabic script, so you don't have to flip to back of book all the time. Would recommend the "My first 100 Arabic words" book for that. Then this is a great 2nd step to start very basic conversations.
